How Can We Choose GI pipes’ Welding Methods?

Time:2018/10/16

There are many welding methods for galvanized steel pipe. The common welding methods include gas welding, manual electric arc welding, Carbon dioxide gas protection welding, submerged arc automatic welding, and tungsten-electrode argon arc welding. But which one is our best choice for hot dipped galvanized pipe’s welding? Below we have an introduction and choose the best one

1.Gas welding

Gas welding is usually used to weld galvanized pipe in the past. Due to the lack of heat input in gas welding, it is easy to product defects and poor mechanical properties of welding seams. Gas welding does great damage to the galvanizing layer and has been gradually eliminated in the installation industry.

2.Carbon dioxide gas protection welding

Carbon dioxide gas protection welding has good welding performance for galvanized steel pipes. Excellent welding joint can be obtained when proper welding specification and matching shielding gas and welding material are adopted. This welding method is rarely used in engineering practice.

3.Tungsten-electrode argon arc welding

The arc energy of tungsten-electrode argon arc welding is concentrated, which has less damage to the galvanizing layer, and it is easier to form a good single-side welding double-side forming joint. It is a welding method worth adopting. While this welding method has shortcomings of slower welding speed and the expensive cost.

4.Manual arc welding

Manual arc welding is the most common welding method used in pipe installation at present. When we using titanium oxide type and titanium calcium type welding electrode for welding, such as J421, J422, J423, etc. We should make a proper selection of the welding electrode. As these welding electrode coatings contain a large amount of rutile and ilmenite, with relatively high melting rate, causing the melting speed is relatively increased. Under the condition of non-oscillating, it can only damage the galvanizing layer at the front of the melting pool. And generally speaking, it will not enlarge the melting area, which can reduce the penetration of zinc liquid into weld metal. In the case of correct operation method and welding material, the mechanical property of the joint is good, and there is no defect of welding quality. Due to the low price and high speed of the manual arc welding compared with the argon tungsten-arc welding, the manual arc welding process is commonly adopted when we have skilled welders.

To sum up, the manual arc welding method is our best choice for welding hot dipped galvanized steel pipes. For more details of high quality hot dipped galvanized steel pipe, please have a view on ADTOMALL.
